According to a recent report by the Independent news site, Russia has stopped using the Crimea bridge across the Kerch Strait to transport military supplies to front-line forces.
Satellite images provided by Maxar analyzed by Ukraine’s OSINT Molfar organization show that, from February to April, no trains carrying military equipment were observed on the railway section of the Crimea bridge,
The only exception was on February 29 when a freight train containing 55 fuel tanks was spotted moving on the bridge.
According to Molfar analysts, the reduction in traffic on the Crimean bridge makes it less vulnerable to attacks by the Ukrainian armed forces.
Analysts’ reports indicate that Russia’s reduction of activities across the Crimea bridge began after July 17, 2023, after a Ukrainian suicide drone attack caused some bridge spans to collapse.
So far, Ukraine is believed to have conducted two attacks on the Crimean bridge.
The first attack took place on October 8, 2022, leading to a fire on the bridge.
The second attack took place in July 2023 using an unmanned boat, damaging the structural integrity of the bridge and leading to the collapse of several sections of the bridge.
In early April, the Guardian news website quoted sources saying that the Ukrainian army was planning to conduct another attack on the Crimea bridge in the first half of 2024.
In an interview with German media in early April, when asked whether Kiev planned to destroy the Crimea bridge this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: `We really want that.`
The Crimea Bridge was built between 2016 and 2018 and is the only road and rail route connecting the Crimean peninsula to mainland Russia.
Since the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict in 2022, many officials and commanders in Ukraine have threatened to destroy the 19km bridge connecting the Crimean peninsula and the Krasnodar region.
The Crimean peninsula, where the Russian Black Sea Fleet is headquartered, has recently been repeatedly targeted by attacks by missiles, drones and unmanned boats.
Deputy Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency of Ukraine (GUR) Vadym Skibitsky stated that Crimea is the key to helping Russia expand its influence in the region.
However, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated that Moscow would consider `using all means, including nuclear` in the event of an attack on Crimea.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the fact that Ukrainian officials publicly spoke out about plans to attack Russian infrastructure once again proves that Russia’s decision to conduct a military operation in Ukraine
